Trinity University will present the 2016 Alvarez Seminar titled Siqueiros Internacional, featuring four top scholars who will interpret the murals of painter David Alfaro Siqueiros in light of concepts and movements beyond the borders of Mexico.
The topic of the seminar relates to a research project of Curtis Swope, assistant professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, who is exploring connections between Siqueiros and the German Left between 1940 and the painter’s death in 1974. The first lecture will take place at the McNay Art Museum and the other three will be held on the Trinity campus.
Scheduled events, all free and open to the public, are:
- Jennifer Jolly of Ithaca College will present “Animating Internationalism: David Alfaro Siqueiros and the Mexican Electricians' Syndicate” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the McNay Art Museum. Following the lecture, attendees are invited to a reception to view prints of Siqueiros’ 13 Grabados of 1931, woodcuts completed while he was in prison.
- Mary Coffey of Dartmouth College will present "Material Dialectics in Mexican Muralism: Orozco, Siqueiros, and Rivera" at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Chapman Auditorium on the Trinity campus.
- Luis Castañeda of Syracuse University will present “Siqueiros and Internationalism in the 1960s” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 in Northrup Hall Room 040 on the Trinity campus.
- Christopher Fulton of the University of Louisville will present "Towards a More Politically Effective Art: Siqueiros and the 'Plastic Integration' Movement" at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 in Northrup Hall Room 040 at Trinity.
Each spring, the Alvarez Seminar sponsors a series of lectures, readings, performances, films or workshops that have provided a profound examination of a critical theme in Mexico, The Americas, and Spain (MAS). The series is made possible by financial support of the Carlos and Malú Alvarez for MAS.
