American journalist and author to speak at Trinity
Sebastian Junger will be the 2016 Maverick Lecture guest speaker

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity University will welcome Sebastian Junger, author, journalist, and director, as the guest speaker of the 2016 Maverick Lecture. His lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Trinity’s Stieren Theater. The lecture is free, open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Junger is the author of WARThe Perfect StormA Death in Belmont, and Fire. His most recent book is Tribe: on Homecoming and Belonging. The book “takes readers on an investigation of the experiences of veterans and proposes that a major cause of pain is not being at war, but coming home.” Additionally, Junger examines Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a side effect of veterans leaving the tight bonds formed in the military and returning to a seemingly disconnected modern society.

In addition to his books, Junger is also the co-director of Restrepo, a documentary that has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary and the 2010 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary chronicles the war in Afghanistan by reporting from the perspective of the soldiers. Junger later produced Korengal, a documentary that focuses on the psychological effects soldiers must overcome during deployments and the emotions they face coming home.

Moreover, in 1998 Junger established The Perfect Storm Foundation, a nonprofit organization that offers educational opportunities for children of people in maritime professions. Junger is also the founder of Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues (RISC), a nonprofit organization that trains freelance conflict journalists in battlefield first aid. A native of New England, he is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

The Maverick Lecture is an annual event that honors the late Maury Maverick Jr., the legendary civil rights lawyer, former member of the Texas Legislature, former Marine, and iconoclastic newspaper columnist. The Maverick Lecture Series is underwritten by the William and Salomé Scanlan Foundation.
