Leadership: It Fits like a Glove

From home field to finance classes, Chris Bianchi uses teamwork and training to develop as a leader and mentor, both on and off the field

As the dust settles at home plate, Chris Bianchi ‘14 straightens up from his catcher’s position. Behind the plate, Bianchi is blocking home runs or telling the pitcher which type of pitch to throw. But at the plate, he lets the bat make the calls. By mid-February, Bianchi was named the SCAC player of the week, leading the Tigers with a .476 batting average, having hit two home runs, six RBI, and two doubles, and scored six runs.

Yet, let the records show: being a leader on the field has prepared Bianchi to be a leader off the field as well. From working with umpires to calling pitches, his wide range of team responsibilities require intelligence, tact, and above all, leadership. A finance and marketing double major who hails from San Diego, Bianchi admits that “without baseball, I would likely be much more a leader by delegation. But because of baseball, I've become more of a leader by example.”

A common trait among Trinity student-athletes, leading by example doesn’t stop at the locker room. From soccer to volleyball to track and field, Trinity student-athletes balance varsity athletics with a rigorous academic curriculum. In 2013, 17 student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans, with three from the baseball team.

Whether at bat or in the classroom, Bianchi hopes to “be able to teach people what needs to be done, instead of just expecting them to know how to do it,” he says. “From what I've noticed, [leading by example] has a much greater impact on a team.”

And whether it’s the Trinity Tigers baseball team, a class project team, or a team in his professional world, Bianchi realizes the importance teamwork plays in everyday life. “Teamwork,” Bianchi says, “means being able to accomplish a goal that you wouldn’t have been able to do on your own.”
