Student reading on campus with stack of books
Reading TUgether
Literature is better when experienced as a communal art

Reading TUgether is a program that emphasizes the value of literature and the shared learning culture that is a hallmark of education at Trinity. Every year, the Reading TUgether selection committee chooses a book for the greater Trinity community to read and collectively discuss. The program is especially targeted to incoming first-years as they prepare over the summer to dive into the college environment. Students start learning to think critically about the material they consume before they even set foot on campus.

Past books have included Evicted, by Matthew Desmond, Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us, by Michael Moss, and The Circle, by Dave Eggers. Early in the fall semester, students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend the Reading TUgether lecture to hear from experts in the field—or even the author himself—discuss the book. These lectures extend the experience of reading a book into a collective discussion about its deep-rooted themes infused in the book. Reading TUgether enables poignant and insightful commentary about many contemporary social issues, such as technology’s invasion on privacy, the debilitating impact of insecure housing, the profit-driven tactics of food giants that shape our diet, and many others.

Greg Mortenson delivered the first Reading TUgether lecture in 2008. Since then, many authors and experts have delivered the lecture every fall semester.
