Trinity Senior Wins UPS Scholarship
BSU president is a political science and Spanish major from Houston

Trinity University senior Tahlar Rowe, a double major in political science and Spanish with a minor in African American studies from Houston, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship for the 2017-18 academic year.

At Trinity, Rowe is president of the Black Student Union, an office she has held since her sophomore year. She also is a resident assistant for the residential life program and simultaneously works as the coordinator for the award-winning H.O.P.E Hall, in addition to other campus roles.

Last summer, Rowe interned for both the Battered Women and Children’s Shelter and the Magik Children’s Theatre. At the shelter, she helped develop new approaches for screening victims of domestic violence. At the theater, she was able to assess the needs of children from San Antonio's East Side.

After her graduation in May 2018, Rowe is interested in seeking elected office. Her love of politics and community involvement is at the core of everything that she does. She is thankful for being awarded the scholarship.

The scholarship is provided by the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) Foundation and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). Through this program, the ICUT Foundation has awarded $170,250 in UPS Scholarships to 39 students at private institutions across Texas. The CIC is an association of more than 700 nonprofit independent colleges and universities and higher education affiliates and organizations that has worked since 1956 to support college and university leadership, advance institutional excellence, and enhance public understanding of private higher education’s contributions to society. CIC is the major national organization focused on providing services to leaders of independent colleges and universities as well as conferences, seminars, and other programs that help institutions improve educational quality, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility.
