Trinity's 1869 Challenge Kicks Off Oct. 10
Annual giving challenge aims for 1,869 gifts in 1,869 minutes

Tigers will have the chance to give where it matters to them through the 1869 Challenge, the University’s annual giving challenge, from Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. through Thursday, Oct. 11, at 11:59 p.m. CDT. Over these 1,869 minutes (or 31 hours), Trinity aims to raise a record-setting 1,869 gifts.

Trinity alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends will support the areas they’re passionate about, whether that’s music, athletics, scholarships, or anything in between! If the gift goal is reached, which would set a University record, Tigers will unlock an additional $50,000 for student scholarships from an anonymous group of donors.

The day is peppered with other challenges, including:

  • Tuttle in the Tower: For every gift students make, Dean of Students David Tuttle will spend one minute locked in Murchison Tower. If students raise $1,500, he will spend the night there!
  • Proud Parents: Klaudia and Paul Brace P’20 will match parent donations up to $10,000. Parents can give to whatever area they’re passionate about, and the Braces’ match will support student scholarships.
  • Student Organizations: Spent long hours preparing the Trinitonian? How about volunteering with TUVAC? Give to the student organization that left an impact on your time at Trinity. The one that receives the most gifts will win an extra $500.
  • Athletics: Trinity’s varsity sports compete with other schools frequently, but during this Challenge, they’ll be competing with each other for an extra $3,000 from some superfans. Whether you prefer to pump your fists for first downs or thrive on three-pointers, show the world which athletics team you support.
  • Howland, Eggen, and Pitts Fellowship for Student Summer Research: Honoring computer science professors John Howland, Maurice Eggen, and Gerald Pitts, this fund was created to help computer science students pursue summer research during their undergraduate education. Such experiences allow students to work closely with faculty on a one-on-one basis, while learning the basics of conducting a formal research study and breaking new ground in the field of computer science. Gifts to this fund will be matched by an anonymous donor.
  • Michael C. Kearl Endowed Scholarship for Aspiring Sociologists: For 37 years professor Michael C. Kearl helped expand the sociological imagination of Trinity University. Following his death in 2015, a fund was created to help carry on his spirit of intellectual curiosity through annual scholarships given to students he would have loved to teach. An anonymous donor will match dollar for dollar every gift made to the Michael C. Kearl Endowed Scholarship for Aspiring Sociologists up to $2,000.

Previously called the 24 Hour Challenge, Trinity’s annual giving challenge was renamed the 1869 Challenge to reflect the University’s commitment to honoring the year of its founding, and to focus on its ultimate challenge—raising 1,869 gifts in 1,869 minutes. Last year, the 24 Hour Challenge shattered University records for both number of gifts made (1,743) and money raised ($354,684.09) in a single day.
