Trinity University student Karina Duran, a senior from San Antonio majoring in English, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship with $2,600 in funding.

Last summer, with support from the Mexico, The Americas, and Spain (MAS) program, Duran completed an internship with Casa de Raices, a nonprofit refugee shelter that provides a meal, warm bed, and friendly atmosphere for families that have been released from detention centers. She also volunteers at the Karnes Detention Center, where she helps women and children seeking asylum.

At Trinity, Duran works as an associate editor for the 1966 Journal and is a student worker at the Coates Library.

The scholarship is provided by the foundation of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas Inc. (ICUT) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).

At the national level, CIC partners with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS scholarship. This year, the ICUT Foundation awarded $101,400 in UPS Scholarships to 39 students at private institutions across Texas.

CIC is an association of 765 nonprofit independent colleges and universities and higher education affiliates and organizations that has worked since 1956 to support college and university leadership, advance institutional excellence, and enhance public understanding of private higher education’s contributions to society. One of CIC’s major program areas is its work with a member fundraising consortia of private colleges, including the ICUT Foundation.
